Big Sisters and Little Sisters of the Young Women Leaders Program are gearing up for their annual food drive on Oct. 19 from noon to 4 p.m. at Kroger locations in Charlottesville – on 1159 Emmett Street, in the Barracks Road Shopping Center, and on 1904 Emmett Street.
YWLP will be collecting non-perishable food items that supporters may conveniently purchase that day or that they bring from home.
All the donations that YWLP will collect go to benefit the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, which serves 25 counties and nine cities on either side of the Blue Ridge Mountains. According to the organization’s website, the food bank helps more than 100,000 people each month by distributing food to soup kitchens, schools and other nonprofit groups.
“While leading up to the Food Drive, the mentors and mentees in the Young Women Leaders Program have the opportunity to learn about world hunger and our global food distribution,” said Meredith Wallace, graduate student coordinator for the Young Women Leaders Program. “Through this curriculum, we hope to build awareness about both global and local issues and become empowered to take action.”
Please stop by either Kroger locations this weekend to meet YWLP participants and to contribute to a worthy cause in helping alleviate hunger within the local community.
