The Maxine Platzer Lynn Women’s Center is proud and grateful to have continuous support from the U.Va. Parents Fund. This year alone, the Women’s Center has received a total of more than $20,000 for three of its core programs: Body Positive/Eating Disorders Education, Iris Magazine, and the Young Women Leaders Program (co-sponsored with Curry).
According to the U.Va. Parents Fund website, the fund “enhances the student experience through annual gifts from parents of current and former students. Directed by the U.Va. Parents Committee, the Parents Fund supports student clubs and cultural events, academic enhancement programs and career services, health and wellness initiatives, and class dinners and traditions that enrich student life across Grounds.”
As a part of the parent testimonials on the U.Va. Parents Fund website, Jim Rutherfurd (Law ’81), parents of Win (Law ’15) and Chanler (A&S ’13), said that the committee’s goals focus on “trying to make a big university small, by supporting organizations that help students find peers with common interests. The committee is particularly interested in supporting those groups’ outreach efforts.” Rutherfurd, of Bronxville, NY, served as the U.Va. Parents Committee co-chair from 2011-2012.
Overall this year, the U.Va. Parents Fund is giving nearly $370,000 to more than 100 causes around Grounds. The Women’s Center is fortunate to be among this list.
Funded projects for the Women’s Center to complete by June 2015:
- “Top Priority” to go toward Body Positive/Eating Disorders Education – $18,500
- “Young Women Leaders Program (YWLP)” to go toward funding such events as Fall Finale and U.Va. Day, as well as the year-long mentoring curriculum – $2,000
- “Iris Magazine” to go toward a conference and celebration for women in STEM – $1,600
Words of gratitude from the Women’s Center:
“I am so grateful for the Parents Committee’s continued support of the Body Positive program. With the funds, we have been able to provide needed outreach materials, books and programming for students,” said Amy Chestnutt, the Body Positive/Eating Disorders Education coordinator.
“It was very exciting to get the grant. We want to […] host a luncheon for undergrad students in engineering and other women at the University involved in engineering, and math, if possible. We hosted an event celebrating [women entrepreneurs] in the iLab at Darden last spring and hope to hold a similar event,” said Alison Kuhn, Iris Magazine assistant editor. Kuhn is a fourth-year student in Media Studies, and Women, Gender and Sexuality.
“When organizations demonstrate their generosity to support our core mission at YWLP we are extremely excited and thankful! Because of the Parents Committee funding, our program can continue to support local young women and give them tools and relationships to foster healthier, more productive lifestyles.” Jaronda Miller
“We sincerely appreciate the U.Va. Parents Committee for supporting YWLP. Their generosity allows local college women, in partnership with middle school girls, to lead by serving the Charlottesville and Albemarle communities.” Julie Trevett-Smith
