This weekend’s tragic attack on Pulse, an LGBTQ nightclub in Orlando, reminds us of how far-reaching the impact of violent events can be. News of violent events can have a significant impact on all of us whether or not a particular instance of violence has affected us directly. Understanding a bit about how we, as humans, process extremely troubling information can be helpful.

Laura Widener is a veteran intern here at the Women's Center. We first met Laura in 2014 when she joined us as a Marketing and Communications intern and were lucky enough to have her return this year as a Body Positive intern. Ask any staff member in the Center about Laura and they will inevitably smile. Laura brings kindness and patience to everything she takes part in, continuously offering a helping hand with programs and events beyond her own intern team.

The Coffelt Public Service Award funds research-based community service projects intended to help both UVA students and youth in the Charlottesville community find meaning by engaging in a mutually beneficial collaboration. The award emphasizes both public service and research such that UVA students and non-profit partners learn from each other as they plan and execute annual projects to benefit children in the Charlottesville-area community.

The Women, Girls, and Global Justice program here at the Maxine Platzer Lynn Women's Center confronts problems and challenges that are common to women and girls around the world. The interns in this program combine their academic community-based course, Front Lines of Social Change with research and service in the Charlottesville area and beyond to advance gender justice.
