When I was 10 years old, I wanted to be a gymnast. At 15 years old, I wanted to be a journalist. At 20 years old, I wanted to be a teacher. And at 25 years old, I just wanted to be happy…

At almost 30 years old - on the verge of yet another major career change and international move with my husband, the goal is … to at least be able to finally afford buying a real couch for my living room – one of those L-shaped sectionals that I could just sink into after a long day of work.

What began at the Maxine Platzer Lynn Women’s Center as a project to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy has now evolved into a year-long partnership with the local non-profit Monticello Area Community Action Agency’s (MACAA) Hope House program.

With the help of their Bigs, Littles recently conquered “the biggest fear most people have,” according to U.Va. Drama Associate Professor Kate Burke: Speaking in public.

On Dec. 6, the Young Women Leaders Program gathered in the afternoon for its annual Fall Finale at Newcomb Hall that kicked off with lunch and a special motivational talk from Burke for the Bigs and Littles, prior to performing choreographed and rehearsed musical presentations to families and peers.

With representation from almost 15 different groups on Grounds, the first Maxine Platzer Lynn Women’s Center Student Advisory Board meeting on Nov. 10 was a strong example of collaboration and a rare opportunity for the Center to receive direct input from those they serve most - students.

About 20 U.Va. students attended the inaugural meeting, with about 10 additional students who have agreed to be on the board, but were unable to attend this meeting due to a class schedule conflict.

Event initiates discussion on body image, creates memories for U.Va. Family Weekend

The third annual Mother-Daughter Tea at the Maxine Platzer Lynn Women’s Center welcomed about 20 guests during last month’s U.Va. Family Weekend. This engaging and powerful event was “the most successful in the past three years” in terms of the amount of interaction and depth of dialogue between interns, staff, mothers and daughters.

Dozens of T-shirts lined the perimeter of the Lawn  in the last week of October, designed with messages like, “It’s my childhood.  Don’t rush me.” and “Love shouldn’t hurt.”

I have been a U.Va. alumna for all of three months now, and to say that I miss the University and everyone I met there is a gigantic understatement. However, life must go on, and I am excited to say that I am about to start a journey that would have never been possible without U.Va. and without the Women’s Center.

When U.Va. government and foreign affairs student Amanda Swanson was a second-year, she went from competing in the Virginia Mock Trial to interacting with lawyers at the Women’s Center as a Legal Clinic intern. With her recent graduation, she is now applying the knowledge she gained in these experiences to the job she will begin in June as a litigation assistant at the MoloLamken law firm in Washington D.C.

For some U.Va. students and alumnae, the Young Women Leaders Program (YWLP) has become more than a volunteer opportunity. Participating in the program has helped solidify career paths in the field of education, as well as created another sort of sorority with bonds made for life.

Ultimately, the program is “fostering competence, connections and autonomy” among everyone involved. The foundation of the program’s curriculum is in this motto.
