The Women, Girls, and Global Justice program here at the Maxine Platzer Lynn Women's Center confronts problems and challenges that are common to women and girls around the world. The interns in this program combine their academic community-based course, Front Lines of Social Change with research and service in the Charlottesville area and beyond to advance gender justice.

It was an especially rainy and chilly day last Saturday, making it the perfect occasion for an afternoon spent inside with a cup of coffee. As part of our celebration of International Women's Month, our Women, Girls, and Global Justice team hosted a poetry-style open mic night at Grit Coffee. With the Iris Magazine, Every Body Has a Story, photo gallery outlining the room, students confronted issues facing women through poetry.

What do you miss the most about your hometown when you're at U.Va?
There are a lot of things I miss about Okinawa when I’m at UVA, since it’s so different. I think most of all I miss the food and the tropical beaches.

If you had asked me three years ago what I thought I would be doing in college, I can’t say I would have told you I’d be spending hours writing grants. I definitely would not have told you that these grants wouldn’t even be for me but despite that, I would be incredibly fulfilled. So how did I get here?
