Young Women Leaders Program (YWLP)

YWLP has received a major grant from the US Department of Education. See story >>
Co-sponsored with the Curry School of Education, the Young Women Leaders program is a free year-long mentoring program that focuses on promoting middle school girls' leadership abilities. Local 7th grade girls who would like to participate are paired with U.Va undergraduate women to work on exploring how women and girls can best reach their leadership potential.
YWLP is directed by Winx Lawrence, Ph.D., professor and clinical psychologist at the Curry School of Education and Dawn Anderson, Director of Mentoring and Diversity Programs in the Women's Center. Program Coordinators are Marla Capper and Meghan Baer.
In late October, the Big and Little Sisters will be participating in a cooking class with professional chef Ashley Hightower!
If you are a former Big Sister and want to stay involved in YWLP or a graduate student interested in becoming involved, consider applying to be a facilitator or trainer. Trainers lead weekly groups of Big Sisters in training and help teach how to best reach and advise a middle school girl. Facilitators lead weekly mentoring groups in area middle schools, keep school contacts informed about the group, and ensure that Big and Little Sisters are making connections. Challenge yourself to make a difference in the lives of both college women and middle school girls by applying to be a leader in YWLP!
