News

The Young Women Leaders Program is proud to announce that it has been chosen to receive the Outstanding Mentoring Program Award by the Virginia Mentoring Partnership. This award celebrates an outstanding program that serves the children and youth of Virginia. YWLP representatives traveled to Richmond on February 12, 2009, to receive this honor at the Jefferson Hotel.

The Virginia Mentoring Partnership was founded in 1994 and seeks to provide training and technical assistance to mentoring programs located in the state. Congratulations to all those involved with the program, especially the Little Sisters who make the program worthwhile!

About the Program

Co-sponsored with the Curry School of Education, the Young Women Leaders program is a year-long mentoring program that focuses on promoting middle school girls' leadership abilities. Local 7th grade girls who would like to participate are paired with U.Va undergraduate women to work on exploring how women and girls can best reach their leadership potential.

YWLP is directed by Edith 'Winx' Lawrence, Ph.D., professor and clinical psychologist at the Curry School of Education and Jennifer Merritt, Ph.D., Director of the Diversity and Advocacy Program at the Women's Center.
