Throughout the academic year, they work with their Editor and Student Editor to plan provocative, engaging content that illuminates issues that matter at UVA and beyond. Iris welcomes internship applications and freelance contributions from UVA students of all genders.

Iris History
Iris Magazine is the Center’s award-winning, nationally acclaimed magazine for thinking young women at UVA and beyond. After trying on several looks—from a photocopied newsletter for the UVA Women’s Studies Program to a national journal for women — In 2012, Iris re-debuted as a web magazine for and about thinking young women.
After more than 40 years of publication, Iris continues to celebrate and empower young women through provocative pieces that underscore the relevance of women’s issues and support the Center’s mission to create change. Stop by the Women’s Center to read archival print copies and see how the issues covered by Iris have changed over the years - and how some of them keep coming back time and time again.
Freelance Opportunities
Iris Magazine considers freelance submissions from UVA students on a rolling basis. Occasionally, opportunities for writers not at UVA to submit to Iris are also announced. Please contact Iris Editor, Mary Esselman for more information.
