U.Va. Assault Statistics

The following statistics reflect the number of cases reported directly to SDVS (or the Sexual Assault Education Office, as it was formerly known), the Sexual Assault Resource Agency (SARA), or, starting in 1997, the Shelter for Help in Emergency (SHE) by a survivor or by a third party (such as a faculty member, a dean, or a friend of a survivor). Domestic Violence data reported by SHE includes all cases involving members of the U.Va. community: students or their partners, faculty or their partners, and staff or their partners.

From 1991-1999, data was collected by the fiscal year (July-June). Starting in 2000, it was collected by the calendar year, in accordance with the data sent to the Department of Education in compliance with the Student Right to Know Act.

Why is there a fluctuation in numbers from year to year? This is hard to explain. However, it is possible that a correlation exists between a rise in student activism in any particular year (such as 2004-2005) and a rise in reporting as students become more aware of the resources and help available to them. We know that the number of actual reports compared with the true number of assaults is low, based on numerous national and more local studies. Rape has a very low reporting rate. So while some might interpret an increase in reports as alarming, we view it as a welcome change--a sign that perhaps more survivors are coming forward to tell someone and seek help.
