The interns and staff of the Maxine Platzer Lynn Women’s Center welcome visitors during U.Va. Family Weekend to the third annual Mother-Daughter Tea on Oct. 31 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. This is a fun, informative and inspirational event to engage those “who have a valuable role in supporting body positivity with their children.”

Join us for a complimentary brunch and activities at the Center, located at 1400 University Avenue on The Corner across from The White Spot. We will provide information about programs and resources at U.Va. that help students with body image and other concerns. You will leave with the answer to these questions: What is fat talk? What is the Body Positive program? How can women better support each other?

“It's a fun way to connect and learn about and from each other,” said Amy Chestnutt, Body Positive / Eating Disorders Education program coordinator at the Women’s Center. “One parent told us it was one of the best experiences she's ever had with her daughter. They learn helpful info about how to better manage and develop positive body image through an interactive discussion.”

One new feature of the event is the photo booth on the first floor of the Women’s Center. In the spirit of Halloween, coincidentally on the same day as the brunch, the Women’s Center will have funny hats available to wear as props for the photos. Participants will be able to snap a few pics together as keepsakes of the day.

“I hope the Tea will spark a conversation between mothers and daughters about body image and body positivity,” said Samantha Karp, who is a fourth year student double-majoring in psychology and Women, Gender, and Sexuality. This is her first year as a Body Positive intern. “Mothers are the No. 1 source of information about body image and are a great resource for daughters to turn to! This is a discussion that is often not had, so even starting the conversation would be wonderful! I hope they come to see the Women's Center as a resource, enjoy meeting other mothers and daughters, and have fun! ”

There is still room for you to participate in this event. Please note: Students may also attend the Mother-Daughter Tea on their own, or may bring a family friend, grandparent, aunt, father, or any other companion with them.

Please email Body Positive/Eating Disorders Education Coordinator Amy Chestnutt or call (434) 243-2463 to RSVP by Monday/Oct. 27.
