What drew you to the Iris internship, and/or what types of stories or subject areas do you hope to experiment with or specialize in for Iris?
I was drawn to Iris because I love writing and the thought of writing for a magazine that specializes in women’s issues was very exciting for me. I hope to develop my professional voice and style through working for Iris, as well as sharpen my point of view.

What has surprised you about UVA?
When I came into UVA, the preppy outward appearance of the school was daunting to me. I had been a nerdy high schooler in a weird high school, and preppy style was way out of my comfort zone. I was surprised to discover all the wonderful, diverse groups within UVA where anyone can find their place, regardless of their wardrobe.

If you could have dinner/breakfast/tea [you pick!] with anyone from history, who would it be?
I would have tea with Amelia Earhart, because along with being incredibly daring, she was an advocate for women’s rights. I find aviation fascinating, and I think she would have a cool historical perspective on both being a pilot and a feminist.

What’s a place you’ve always wanted to visit but have never been?
I have always wanted to go to Puerto Rico. I’m half Puerto Rican on my father’s side and half my family lives there, but my father has never taken me or my younger sibling there with him when he visits them. I’ve always wanted to visit and connect with the Puerto Rican part of myself.

Who is your favorite fictional character, and why?
My favorite fictional character is Spock from the original series of Star Trek. His decisions are largely influenced by logic, but he is a strong advocate for ethics and human rights for all. I appreciate his gentleness, his loyalty, and his love of discovery, all traits I would like to embody in my own life. Plus, his eyebrows are fabulous.
