1. What brought you to the Women's Center?
I've been here for 3 years now and originally, I was really interested in getting involved with survivor support work again. I've stayed because I love the community and the people I get to work with.
2. What is your favorite memory of UVA thus far?
It's really hard for me to pick just one, but I think that it would have to be one of my Lighting of the Lawns. LOTL has always been my favorite UVA event; I just love when students come together like. It's always before finals and you can feel the tension building on Grounds as everyone prepares. LOTL is just a great chance to take a break and enjoy a night with a lot of fun lights and music.
3. Who is a person that inspires you?
A person that inspires me is Sara Ramirez, who is well known for their role on Grey's Anatomy as Callie Torres and their activism for queer people. I just love that they really stand up for what they believe in and that they aren't afraid of talking about difficult issues. Their portrayal of Callie was also instrumental to my growing up as a young person, so I think I've always just been super inspired by Ramirez.
4. What is one thing you do after a stressful day?
I journal. I used to hate it because it seemed like a lot of time, and I didn't see the point, but now it really helps me get my thoughts out. I also try to journal on really good days so my journal isn't full of all stressful things.
5. How does your work for the Women's Center motivate you?
I'm currently the Intern Engagement Leader with Engaged Scholarship (ES). I love this role because it has really allowed me to offer support to interns this year, and I've been able to work with the ES team to also create events to support university students on the whole. It makes me feel like what I'm doing can have an actual change. I really hope to be able to help students succeed in their goals and offer them resources, and my internship as the Women's Center has continuously motivated me to keep doing this.
6. What’s a podcast or TV show that’s grabbed your attention recently?
Grey's Anatomy, as per usual. In S17 E9 of Grey's Anatomy, Amelia tells someone that "her trauma response is different than yours." I've never seen a TV show address that, but it is so important to talk about.
