Every year, parents are invited to Grounds for Family Weekend, offering them the chance to experience the daily life their child has built at the University. In celebration of Family Weekend, the Women's Center Body Positive intern team invites students and their visiting family members to join Women's Center staff and interns in an interactive conversation about what it means to create a body positive environment.

During the spring semester of 2016, Curry PhD candidate Nora Arkin conducted surveys and interviews to evaluate the effectiveness of the Body Project, an eating disorders prevention intervention used in the Women’s Center’s Body Positive Program. Nora’s soon to be presented findings from her research verify the Body Project’s positive impact on undergraduate women at UVA.

Hannah Trible, Co-Coordinator of the Body Positive program, represented the Women's Center last week at the 2016 National Eating Disorders Association Conference in Chicago. Our Body Positive Coordinator attends the NEDA Conference each year to improve our knowledge of the innovative programs, tools, and techniques available to promote prevention and raise awareness about eating disorders. We were excited to send Hannah to Chicago and anxious to hear about her experience at the conference.

Laura Widener is a veteran intern here at the Women's Center. We first met Laura in 2014 when she joined us as a Marketing and Communications intern and were lucky enough to have her return this year as a Body Positive intern. Ask any staff member in the Center about Laura and they will inevitably smile. Laura brings kindness and patience to everything she takes part in, continuously offering a helping hand with programs and events beyond her own intern team.

Perfect Illusions, an open-mic style event hosted by the UVA Coalition on Eating Disorders and Exercise Concerns, aims to break the silence surrounding body image and eating disorders. The students, counselors, medical and athletics professionals who make up the coalition provide this event each year to support students in recovery and to raise awareness of the prevalence of eating and exercise concerns on Grounds.

Last Friday, October 23, our Body Positive Program welcomed interns, staff, and community members to the Women’s Center for the annual Mother-Daughter Brunch. Guests were encouraged to bring their mothers, sisters, aunts, friends, anyone who may have an important role in or influence on their lives. Over coffee and muffins, our Body Positive team engaged guests in a discussion about body positivity and the resources available for students here at the Women’s Center.
