The Maxine Platzer Lynn Women’s Center is excited to announce Catherine Erickson as our new full-time counselor! The position was made possible by additional funding from the University expressly for an additional Trauma Counselor at the Women’s Center. U.Va. President Teresa Sullivan made the announcement following the Rolling Stone media coverage of sexual assault on Grounds.

In the early 1990s, I moved to Charlottesville to obtain psychiatric and psychopharmacological treatment. I lived in Charlottesville from 1991-1997, and it was an extremely difficult and very sad time in my life. However, the helpful and friendly staff at the U.Va. Womens’ Center, now renamed Maxine Platzer Lynn Women’s Center, helped to make a sad and difficult time as bearable and productive as possible.

The University of Virginia’s ultra-secret Seven Society recently announced gifts totaling $115,554 to U.Va.’s Counseling and Psychological Services and the Maxine Platzer Lynn Women’s Center to “more broadly encourage the kind of action and attention necessary to realize the empathy and understanding that must lie at the heart of this place.” The gifts came after the society

Sexual assault is a traumatic event that impacts women physically, emotionally, spiritually and socially. This confidential group will offer an opportunity to meet in a safe environment to support one another in the recovery process. Group members will learn new ways of dealing with issues such as social pressures, relationships while healing from the assault, academic impacts and re-setting healthy boundaries. It will also address grief concerns that sometimes arise after an assault

The Maxine Platzer Lynn Women’s Center offers a therapy group for faculty and staff who have experienced sexual assault. The group focuses on triggers in the work place, as well as self-care, among other topics. The group is open to men and women. For more information on a similar group for students, visit this link.
