When I was 10 years old, I wanted to be a gymnast. At 15 years old, I wanted to be a journalist. At 20 years old, I wanted to be a teacher. And at 25 years old, I just wanted to be happy…

At almost 30 years old - on the verge of yet another major career change and international move with my husband, the goal is … to at least be able to finally afford buying a real couch for my living room – one of those L-shaped sectionals that I could just sink into after a long day of work.

What began at the Maxine Platzer Lynn Women’s Center as a project to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy has now evolved into a year-long partnership with the local non-profit Monticello Area Community Action Agency’s (MACAA) Hope House program.

As the 2015 honoree for National Girls and Women in Sports Day at U.Va., Meghan O’Leary described her current pursuit of the Olympics in a speech addressed to an audience of more than 130 guests at a reception before last month’s Virginia-Georgia Tech women’s basketball game.

O’Leary grew up playing softball and volleyball, continuing in these sports as a student-athlete at U.Va.

The Maxine Platzer Lynn Women’s Center would like to recognize William C. Johnson, Chair of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, and other leaders at the School of Engineering and Applied Science who have demonstrated an especially high level of solidarity on the issue of sexual assault prevention and response in recent months.

In addition to the Mental Wellness Screening Day at Newcomb Hall that occurs each semester, this Spring Semester, the Women's Center will also be offering an option to visit with their counselors the following day.

The Maxine Platzer Lynn Women’s Center is honored to be selected as the Inter-Sorority Council’s community service partner for the 2014-2015 school year. Based on fundraising efforts during the fall semester, the ISC plans to donate $1,000 to the Center.

The ISC is the largest organization of women on Grounds, with more than 2,400 members in 15 sororities in Spring 2015.

Sexual assault is a traumatic event that impacts women physically, emotionally, spiritually and socially. This confidential group will offer an opportunity to meet in a safe environment to support one another in the recovery process. Group members will learn new ways of dealing with issues such as social pressures, relationships while healing from the assault, academic impacts and re-setting healthy boundaries. It will also address grief concerns that sometimes arise after an assault
