Free Cyntoia: A Story of Redemption

Thursday, February 6, 2020 - 6:00pm - 8:00pm
Old Cabell Hall

Black Student Alliance and University Programs Council (UPC) will host Cyntoia Brown-Long in Old Cabell Hall. During the program, Cyntoia Brown-Long will speak about her experience overcoming adversity in the US prison system. Cyntoia has long been an advocate for women's empowerment, and particularly the empowerment of black and brown women from lower socio-economic backgrounds who find themselves vulnerable to the realities of a world with rampant sex trafficking.

By bringing this perspective to the UVA community, we hope to encourage students to never give up on themselves, as Cyntoia fought through much adversity to become the woman she is today. The event is also meant to inspire members of UVA to consider how they can be an ally to those who may be experiencing the same struggles Cyntoia did. This event will feature performances by Flux Poetry.

There is a Facebook event for Cyntoia’s talk here. The Women’s Center is pleased to be among the co-sponsors of this event.
