What brought you to YWLP?
I first heard about YWLP when I visited the Women's Center for the first time. I learned it is a program where you mentor middle school girls through bonding, support, workshops, and so much more. Instantly, I knew that I wanted to be a part of YWLP to create a safe and comfortable environment for them.
Have you had a mentor that impacted you? Or has being a mentor made an impact on how you see yourself?
Being a mentor has definitely made an impact on how I see myself. I have learned so much through mentoring. Being a mentor has made me more emotionally aware, adaptable to situations, understanding how to give feedback, and so much more. One thing I learned from being a YWLP mentor is that you never know what the mentees can teach you! Expect the unexpected!
Who is a woman that inspires you and why?
A woman who inspires me is my mother. She is a woman who inspires me because she has taught and given me more than one ever could. With her strength and resilience, I am able to be at UVA. I am proud to be a First-Generation student and this is due to her support. When I mentor the littles, I always think about what my mom would say and do! She has always been there for me and I am so grateful to her for everything!
What is something you and your little have bonded over?
One thing that my little and I have bonded over is music! We both listen to similar genres and artists, such as Frank Ocean. We also have many bonding conversations about similar experiences, such as friends, school, family, food, and so much more!
What is one thing you do after a stressful day?
One thing I do after a stressful day is walk my dog while listening to music. This allows me to block out the stress because I don't have any thoughts while I walk, except for trying not to hit any poles or tripping. The walk helps me to remove myself from the stress.
