1. What brought you to the Women’s Center?
In One Less presentations about survivor support, I have always told students about the Women’s Center and Gender Violence and Social Change as resources and wanted to get involved myself. I was really interested in the Women’s Center’s unique opportunities for interns and crucial work in the UVA and Charlottesville communities, from counseling to legal help to mentorship.
2. What other organizations are you involved with at UVA?
I'm Vice President of One Less, a sexual violence prevention organization that gives presentations about consent, intimate partner violence, survivor support, and the reporting process. I’m also Vice President and a co-founder of Planned Parenthood Generation Action at UVA, an organization that advocates for Planned Parenthood’s local and national work. Also, I'm an undergraduate TA for introductory micro and macroeconomics!
3. If you could describe the Gender Violence & Social Change team in 3 words, what would they be?
Passionate, informed, engaged.
4. What is your favorite memory of UVA thus far?
I couldn’t possibly choose just one, but one of my favorite memories was Lighting of the Lawn last December. I studied abroad in the spring, so Lighting of the Lawn was one of my last memories at UVA with my friends who graduated. Lighting of the Lawn is an incredible gathering of students and faculty, and also I love cider and lights!
5. What does leadership mean to you?
Leadership means genuinely listening and then making decisions. While it’s important to take charge and get things done, the people you work with and on behalf of are most important, whether it’s a small group, the Women’s Center, or the entire UVA community. I think that leadership means caring about more than a specific project or goal, but about the success and wellbeing of everyone involved. Leadership means advocating for others.
